Your 2019 spring/summer design events

Trends / 08 May 2019

The Salone del Mobile has recently drawn to a close, but our drive for design has by no means gone! Thankfully, there is no shortage of events in this sector and, between now and September, the calendar is packed out with interesting events. As we await the grand opening of the ADI Design Museum Compasso d’Oro in 2020 (which promises to be one of Europe’s largest design museums), we have picked out a handful of events for you across Europe that we think are not to be missed. Pens and diaries at the ready!

May 2019, from Venice to Copenhagen

The first event on our list is not strictly related to design. On 11th May Venice’s Biennale art exhibition opens and can be visited throughout the summer and autumn, running until 24th November. This year’s event is curated by Ralph Rugoff, Director of the Hayward Gallery in London, and chaired by Paolo Baratta. The theme is “May You Live In Interesting Times”. Artists are invited to reflect on the complexity of our times through their work and explore the feeling of precariousness that derives from threats (whether real or perceived) to the founding values of our society. Among the countries welcomed at the prestigious Biennale event, Ghana, Madagascar, Malaysia and Pakistan will participate for the first time.

You can find all the details about tickets, venues and times via this link.

From 23 to 25 May we move to Copenhagen in Denmark for “3 days of design”.
The event will display selected works by designers, architects and artisans, exploring new trends in interior design, looking not only at the world of furniture, but also lighting and lifestyle. Exhibitions, showrooms, events and workshops will bring the home of Scandinavian style to life for a weekend.

The website has all of the information about what’s on and how to get there.

June 2019, Spain and Switzerland

Design Miami / Basel is the twin event to the one going by the same name held in Miami, Florida. You don’t need to cross the ocean to take part in this forum on international design, which brings together some of the most important designers, critics, gallery owners and curators to discuss and debate the current state of design and the design market. This global exhibition grows and gets better every year, injecting new life into the collector design sector.

Back for its 14th edition, Barcelona Design Week will run 12-19 June: an event designed to bring the creativity and vitality of Spanish and international design to life. This year’s theme is “Transicion”: the change being explored here is not only the urgent change we perceive as necessary for the economy and the environment, but also, in a broader sense, the perennial change affecting people and society by their own very nature. The event organisers invite designers and planners to reflect on how we can design this transition towards a safer world and a more advanced society.

After your summer holidays: September 2019 from Paris to Milan

The second Maison & Objet will be held 6-10 September in Paris. This trade fair centred around the world of styling and objects for the home will be focused specifically on the office space this year. Off the back of Workplace 3.0, the exhibition created at the Salone del Mobile in Milan for 2019, the theme of the office as a fluid, multi-functional design space will be explored further. The event will look at how design can help us to feel at home, even in the workplace.

See here for everything you need to know.

And if you’re missing Milan, the Fiera Rho exhibition centre will be welcoming Homi Outdoor, a new exhibition by Homi, 13-16 September. The event will focus on furniture, furnishings and decorations for your home and outdoor spaces. Currently in its 5th edition, the exhibition continues to gain greater standing on the design event scene – that’s why we think you should add it to your calendar!

100 years of Bauhaus: 2019 celebrations

We close with an important anniversary in the world of architecture and design. 2019 marks 100 years since the foundation of the Bauhaus, the art and design school founded by Walter Gropius who, in just 14 years of business, made design history.
To mark the occasion, celebrations will run for an entire year across Germany, with events, shows and exhibitions. Watch out in particular for the two new Bauhaus museums opening in Weimar and Dessau, where the famous institute is based.

To keep up to date with all of the events, take a look at the programme online.
